Where to go for gear

As the slopes begin to run for the new ski season (Sunlight’s first day is December 11, while up-valley resorts have already opened in time for Thanksgiving), there’s no better time to look into gear options. The time is now, especially if you’re hoping to snag some last-minute deals.

Whether you plan to rent your gear one or two times, buy second-hand boots, or invest in a brand-new kit-and-kaboodle, there are many local options for gear shopping in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Rental Shops

Here are a few popular local stores for ski and snowboard gear rentals, including both downhill and cross-country options.

  • Brian’s Bench. Offers rentals and tune-ups, and the ability to book your rental online.
  • Basalt Bike and Ski. With three locations (Basalt, Carbondale, and Aspen), Basalt Bike and Ski has rentals as well as various services and repairs.
  • Sunlight Ski and Bike Shop. With a store in downtown Glenwood and at the ski resort, Sunlight offers daily and season-long rentals, along with other clothing and gear options for purchase. You can book rentals online with them.
  • Summit Canyon Mountaineering. They also have a full shop of gear to buy, for both summer and winter seasons.
  • Blue Sky Ski Rental and Repair. Blue Sky, located in Glenwood, is known for their affordable rates and their full ski service and repair menu. They also offer ski clothing rentals.
  • Sunset Ski. For a Snowmass rental, check out Sunset; they have a full shop service menu and rent out brand new equipment each ski season.

Buy Your Own

If you’re looking to purchase your own gear, there are still a ton of local places to turn to.

  • Bristlecone Mountain Sports. Located in Basalt, this all-sports store also offers ski services and repairs.
  • Ragged Mountain Sports. This consignment store is full of gems and great finds for nearly any budget.
  • Cripple Creek Backcountry. While on the pricier side, the gear at Carbondale-based Cripple Creek Backcountry is some of the best; it’s an investment kind of shop.
  • Facebook Marketplace. Don’t forget about locals selling their stuff for less online. Roaring Fork Swap is a go-to option.
